(8) BeReal and the Diffusion Theory

 The Diffusion Theory is a very interesting way to look at various inventions and technologies from the past and in the present. Looking at the patterns of how the various ideas are implemented in society help people learn more about integration within the sociological factors of people.

I wanted to focus on how BeReal was integrated into society specifically for teens using this exact theory. Social media as a whole is a destructive concept, that has been dogged and taken over by a few main apps;

-Snapchat

-Instagram

-Tik tok

-Twitter

Honorable mentions would be Youtube and Vsco. Most social media has people questioning themselves as they are overwhelmed with stimulants and reactive media, most of it fake which allows it to linger in our minds for much longer. What BeReal has done was try to make a “social media” that was less focused on such theatrics and put energy and money towards something that would be more harmless and inclusive as it had no real hierarchy or popularity scale. It also directly challenged the idea of being fake online with its name and concept overall, taking images in the exact moment it tells the user to, and “be real”. Early innovators were people on social media themselves, as the app wasn’t really taking off and the whole process seemed to be unheard of until recent times. As the communication over things like tik tok and twitter talked about the app, that is not only when people began to download it more, but when the early innovators emerged. Some early adopters I'd say are Chipotle and Elf because after realizing the traction slowly picking up, their partnerships allowed it to take off. Right now, we are at the bridge between the early majority and late majority, as people are predicting this to be a fad. So called communication channels like other social media, leave people predicting its float with all of their other social media. I think this is the main reason this app in particular has late adopters, because of the prediction that it will fail.

In my opinion, I do dislike social media altogether, but in the grand scheme of things I'm addicted, and we as a society are addicted, too. If we were to somehow, though it's very unlikely, leave this app to thrive and take over the other social media, our generation would be happier for the sheer fact that it is more harmless than any other social media form we have today.
